India’s Hatchback sales July 2025 market is clearly under pressure. As buyers increasingly prefer vehicles with better space, higher ground clearance, and stronger road presence, hatchbacks are finding fewer takers. The recent price hikes haven’t helped either, as the gap between small cars and compact SUVs has narrowed, making SUVs the more attractive choice.
Hatchback sales fell by 10.09% YoY in July 2025 and the overall sales have reduced to 74,475 units as compared to 82,831 units in July 2024. That is 8,356 units less, and it demonstrates how quickly the segment is losing its momentum.
Maruti Suzuki Still Leads.
Maruti Suzuki is still leading in the hatchback field and 4 of its models are at the top 5.
- Maruti WagonR remained the leader even though its sales were decreasing (YoY) by 9.15 to 14,710 to 16,191 units.
- Maruti Swift was at No. 2, and sales declined 15.81 to 14,190 units compared to sales of 16,854 one year earlier.
- The surprise star was Maruti Baleno which registered 34.31% YoY growth, moving to 12,503 units against 9,309 units.
- Maruti Alto had a hard time, and sales reduced by 19.62 to 5,910 units against 7,353 units in July 2024.

Together, these four models gave Maruti Suzuki a commanding 63.53% share of the hatchback segment.
Tata and Toyota Hold Their Ground
- Tata Tiago (with EV) lost a bit to 1.59% YoY, and sold 5,575 units in July 2025.
- The rebadged Baleno, which was Toyota Glanza, recorded a modest growth of 3.78% as it raced up to 5,019 units against 4,836 units.
- Tata Altroz recorded a positive development, as it increased 13.39 percent YoY to 3,905 units and still gained first-time purchasers.

Hyundai Faces Setback
Both of Hyundai’s popular hatchbacks saw steep declines:
- i10 NIOS dropped 27.67% YoY, selling 3,560 units.
- i20 fell even harder, down 31.21% YoY to 3,396 units.
Smaller Marutis Struggle
Lower down the order, Maruti’s smaller hatchbacks had a tough time:
- Ignis dropped 10.79% to 1,977 units.
- Celerio declined 43.53% to 1,392 units.
- S-Presso suffered the sharpest fall, plunging 65.02% to just 912 units, down from 2,607 units.
EVs and Niche Players
- MG Comet EV saw sales of 912 units, down 24% YoY.
- Renault Kwid sales more than halved, plunging 53.10% to only 265 units.
- Citroen C3 was the rare bright spot, almost doubling sales with a 98.89% jump to 179 units.
- On the flip side, Citroen eC3 EV fell 60.45%, managing just 70 units.

The numbers make one thing clear: hatchbacks are on the decline in India. While Maruti continues to dominate the charts, even its models are feeling the heat. SUVs and crossovers are steadily eating into hatchback demand, a trend that looks set to accelerate in the coming years.
